About:
Beginning Painting builds on the skills you’ve learned in Beginning Drawing. We will learn all the basics of how to use oil paint, and explore concepts like color theory, composition, light logic, perspective, and pictorial space as they apply to painting. You will get a chance to explore all of the main genres of painting including still life, portrait, and landscape, and you will have opportunities to apply these new skills to creative work. We will learn about the history of oil painting as well as contemporary practices.
Intermediate Painting takes the skills you’ve learned in Beginning Painting to a new level of individual creative expression. We will continue to expand painting skills and technique, and you will be further challenged to create individualized work. We will learn about a wide range of painting practices (contemporary and historical) and actively engage that learning in the painting process. By the end of the semester, you will have a stronger artistic voice with which to communicate in painting, and will be creating work completely of your own design.

Jenny Phelps is an active, practicing artist based in Los Angeles, specializing in Drawing and Painting. She is an experienced instructor of Drawing and Painting at all levels, having taught at SoCal institutions such as USC, UCLA, CSULB, and Whittier College for over 10 years, With a vast knowledge of contemporary and historical drawing & painting practices, Jenny can help you to learn the skills required to create paintings that reflect and challenge your artistic interests.
